NYU TiscH School of The ARTs @ Yellowbrick
Artist Reflection: June 8, 2023
STORY TIME:
Last year in June of 2022, I came across NYU Tisch School of The Arts, Yellowbrick TV and Motion Picture course on my social media news feed. I inquired to know more information. I immediately wanted to do the course but did not have the funds to do it. The school then sent me information about scholarship opportunities where I was encouraged to apply, so I did. I was blessed with this scholarship and was able to attend the course. This was an answered prayer from a long time ago. . . Back many years to high school. . .
During my senior of high school, when it was time to look for colleges to attend, NYU Tisch was my first choice. It was my dream college to study animation. I prayed that God would open the door for me to go to that school. At that time support for minorities in the arts and across numerous industries was scarce to nothing. Even my guidance counselor offered me nothing but discouraging words. She told me I didn't have the grades or skills to get in there being the S.A.T. score. I was devastated. When I told my Mother, she was upset by the words of the guidance counselor. My Mother told me to apply to the school regardless of the guidance counselors opinion. So I went back the next day to my guidance counselor and told her that I wanted to apply to NYU Tisch. She scoffed and said I have no chance in getting in. I left her office with my dignity and never went back to her again after that conversation. And I did apply for the school and received a rejection letter because my S.A.T. score was not high enough though they said I have a ton of talent. I did graduate high school as the top Graphic Design honor student with a certification along with my high school diploma. I realized how silly it is to measure someones talent and skill based on that single test score especially those in the arts, but that was the standard at that time in society.
After applying to more schools, I was accepted into a few others, Among them was Lesley University. I attended Lesley for animation. That chapter in my life is a whole other story in itself full of trial and tribulation with many false and broken promises.
Fast forward to now, my prayer was answered in a way that I didn't even expect and this time for Television and Motion Picture strangely tied into the bigger picture of the dream I continue to pursue. Timing is everything. I am grateful. I am satisfied. Though it happened much differently than I imagined, I still got to go to my dream school and just graduated the course they offered as of June 4, 2023.
The course covered the in-depth world and processes of the television and film, equipped with Professors and lessons in the form of informative videos, readings, quizzes, and assignments. It covered everything from film history, to pre-production, production, and post-production, as well as film festivals, distribution, and business contracts. It provided the spoken language and terminology of the industry as well as its etiquette. I most certainly enjoyed this educational experience and am forever grateful to take part in it. Now you know why I say, its an answered prayer.

MY WORK:
Below is my portfolio of assignments during my adventures in the course starting with the first, ending with the last. And as always, thank you for checking out my works.
Below is my portfolio of assignments during my adventures in the course starting with the first, ending with the last. And as always, thank you for checking out my works.
Assignment 1.
This was the first assignment. After the lessons, I had to tell a story with imagery. I enjoyed this assignment. The story here, is about a Moon Dweller who makes it snow on the earth. I shot the live sequences on my iPhone. I then used my own photography as well as a few images I generated using, "Dalle OpenAI" to help build the concept. The music is scored and made by me also.
Assignment 2.
I had to write a film analysis for three different film shorts from a library provided by the school after various lessons and quizzes.
Assignment 3.
I had to create a storyboard and animatic so I sketched and created this piece I call, "Nefertari." The characters, artwork, design, and story are all by me. The music is also my creation. I enjoyed this process. It was refreshing and has been a while since I've done a storyboard and animatic. The course taught it in such a way that simplified the process of storyboarding and animatics.
Assignment 4.
For this assignment, I had to create a short film screenplay for my capstone project.
Assignment 5.
The next step was location scouting for my capstone project along with the storyboard of the screenplay. I also added in the talent and things I would need in order to film this project.
Assignment 6.
The next assignment was the shot list in preparation of filming my capstone project.
Assignment 7.
In this part of the course, using the shot list and storyboard for referencing, I had to film my capstone project and put all the footage into a raw reel, unedited. Because I filmed over a half hour of footage, I took the best takes and condensed it into 6 minutes to meet the requirements of the assignment.
Assignment 8.
After in an in-depth lessons, readings, and quizzes in all aspects of post production and sound, I had to now fully edit my capstone project. This is the finish of it.
Assignment 9.
For this assignment, I had to create a film poster for my capstone project.
Assignment 10.
This was the final assignment I had to do in order to complete the course being an Electronic Press Kit (EPK).
